WebJan 5, 2013 · An osteon contains a central canal called the Haversian canal, which can be seen in the illustration above. Blood vessels and nerves run through this structure. A Haversian canal is surrounded by circular, concentric layers of tissue called lamellae. The lamellae are made of a material called bone matrix. WebCompact bone is the denser, stronger of the two types of bone tissue (Figure 5.9) and it provides support and protection. The microscopic structural unit of compact bone is called an osteon, or Haversian system. Each osteon is composed of concentric rings of calcified matrix called lamellae (singular = lamella).
